Fred H Wheatcroft (1893 - 1983) born: Chorley, Lancashire
 
  Fred started work in 1907 as a telegraph boy in Chorley with the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway.

During the 1st World War he joined up with his brother Stanley in the 19th Manchester Pals Battalion, he won the Military Medal and was twice mentioned in despatches for his courage at the Battle of the Somme.
